I'm a VoIP SOFTWARE ENGINEER (C/C++) and have no experience in HDLs (Verilog/VHDL) but I'm highly interested in learning FPGAs. I have also got a copy of "Practical FPGA Programming In C".
Now can I start learning FPGAs directly using ImpulseC? OR should I must first learn basics of HDLs and then come toward "LEARNING FPGAs USING ImpulseC".
Either way, what kind of career opportunities I can avail in the end?

I am a graduate computer engineer, teaching assistant and did some fpga work with VOIP equipment as an intern. Also I've been dealing with FPGAs for about 3 years now and started Impulse-C about a year ago. From my experience and lecturing on the topic of FPGA designs, I would recommend you start with the basics of HDL programming (VHDL or Verilog) and work with Xilinx or Altera fpgas.
The biggest question circulating among my colleagues on Impulse-C is "how much hardware knowledge must a software programmer know in order to create useful hardware designs?" Impulse C is powerful in skipping the middle man in moving software to hardware, but to fully get a good understanding of what is happening to your designs you'll need some HDL and FPGA knowledge.
Career wise...well...what do I know..I'm still a student right?
