I read in the book p 123 in the last paragraph:

My questions are:
* I assumed that this paragraph described the hardware simulation in Impulse C, am I correct?
* What does "the original application" refer to? Does it refer to the test bench processes?

Yes, this does refer to hardware cycle-simulation. The hardware portion of the application is translated back into cycle-accurate C code, which is then compiled and linked with the software/testbench portions of the application into an executable.
